Ryan O’Hare AP Literature – Mr. Clemmons G Block 5/8/15 The Root of Many Problems In William Shakespeare’s play Hamlet, the main character Hamlet has the dilemma of having not one but multiple problems to deal with. Hamlet’s main difficulty cannot be isolated because Hamlet has too many problems. In reality, Hamlet has multiple problems that attack him in a very strategic order. The first of his many problems is the appearance of his father, King Hamlet s ghost. As The Ghost gives Hamlet the command to kill his uncle, we see Hamlet s morality become a problem. His morality is so great that it delays him in murdering Claudius, the man who killed his father. However, one of Hamlet s biggest drawbacks is that he tends to think things out†¦show more content†¦The latter of Hamlet’s problems is derived from his relationship with those close to him. Hamlet does suffer from an Oedipus complex which is a great cause of much of the strife he has with his mother, and therefore the cause of some of the problems he has with his uncle. Also, Haml et s relationship with Ophelia causes him much grief and distraction as he sways between swooning in love, to berating her, to grieving her loss like a lover. â€Å"†¦.wise men know well Enough what monsters you make of them. To a nunnery, go, And quickly too. Farewell.† (3.1.138-140) This quote from Hamlet to Ophelia, spoken while being spied upon by Claudius and Polonius, shows the utter hatred Hamlet has for Ophelia in the middle of the play. Not shortly before this he was writing letters to her confessing his profound love to her and not shortly after he was he in her grave lamenting over her dead body. This violent switch of emotions in Hamlet shows how much grief Ophelia has caused her. The same can be said for the Oedipus complex with his mother, as his emotions are torn apart in this also and it causes him to not trust his own emotions. The appearance of the ghost to Hamlet causes him much confusion. When the ghost first appears to Hamlet, he is overjoyed to once again see his father, however, when the ghost delivers his command for revenge to Hamlet, Hamlet doesn’t take too well to it.
